Lumno

Selection quick actions

When you select text while reading a page, Lumno suggests a suitable AI action next to it, such as explaining a piece of code, translating a passage in another language or summarizing a long article. When you click an action, Lumno sends the text to the AI you've chosen in a new tab.

It doesn't appear every time you select text

Selecting text is one of the most common things you do while reading, often just to keep your place or copy something. To avoid getting in your way, Lumno first checks on your device whether the selected text has a clear purpose, and shows its button only when the text is likely to need help:

  • Shown for: questions, text in a language different from the page, code or error messages, numbers and calculations, terms worth looking up, and full paragraphs of prose.
  • Not shown for: URLs, email addresses, interface text such as buttons and menus, common words like "this" or "we", and text that's very short or longer than 2,400 characters.
  • Text in password fields and payment fields is never read.

If you don't click the button, it disappears after about two seconds.

How to use it

  1. Turn on "Selection quick actions" under Labs in Lumno's settings. It's off by default.
  2. Select some text on a page with your mouse. If Lumno judges that it may need help, a Lumno button appears next to it.
  3. Click the button and choose an action such as Answer, Translate, Explain, Summarize, Research or Calculate. Lumno puts the action you're most likely to need first.

Choose the AI and how it opens

  • Preferred provider: choose the AI to use, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Doubao, Qwen, Yuanbao, MiniMax, DeepSeek or Kimi.
  • Search in the background: when this is on, the AI page opens in a background tab so your reading isn't interrupted, and these tabs are collected in the "AI Search" tab group.

Privacy

Lumno decides whether to show the button on your device. The text is sent only after you click an action, and only to the AI site you've chosen, through the page that opens. Lumno has no servers and doesn't store or upload the text.
