Pinyin Search & Keyboard Layouts

Lumno 1.1.4 lets local search match pinyin, initials and pieces of a title, reads queries typed on the wrong keyboard layout, adds a Fuzzy pinyin setting, and smooths how the toolbar popup's quick settings open and close.

New features (6)
  • Local search (open tabs, bookmarks and history) now finds Chinese titles by full pinyin, initials or a mix of both, so wxds, wxdushu and weixinds all find 微信读书. Words may be apart or out of order: 飞书文档 also finds 飞书云文档 and "文档 - 飞书". Every reading of a polyphonic character counts, lv finds 绿色, traditional titles match simplified text and pinyin, and a Chinese query finds a site address spelled in its pinyin or initials (知乎 for zhihu.com, 京东 for jd.com). The results mark the characters a pinyin match spelled, and older history is now reachable by pinyin too.
  • Search ignores differences such as full-width forms and accents, and Korean matches initial consonants (ㅅㅇ for 서울) and the syllable still being typed. The search scope panel matches the same way.
  • A new Fuzzy pinyin setting under Search Result Settings (off by default) treats z/zh, c/ch, s/sh, n/l, an/ang, en/eng and in/ing as the same.
  • Forgot to switch keyboards? When nothing local matches, Lumno reads the query again as if typed on the Russian, Ukrainian, Hebrew, Arabic or Korean 2-set layout ("vjcrdf" finds Москва, "tkatjd" composes 삼성), and reads those scripts back as US keys ("пшерги" finds GitHub). These results rank below direct matches.
  • The toolbar popup's quick settings now animate open and closed, with a clearer layout and spacing throughout the popup. Segmented controls share one slide motion.
  • While a WebDAV server throttles requests, the toolbar popup shows "WebDAV waiting to retry" instead of "WebDAV syncing".
Bug fixes (5)
  • Fixed very short English queries such as js, cs or ai matching Chinese titles like 技术, 测试 or 在.
  • Fixed short letter-digit terms inside Chinese titles, such as 4A or 5G in 移动4A平台, not being found.
  • Fixed inline autocomplete changing the case of what you typed: typing 4A now completes to 4Anet.com, not 4anet.com.
  • Fixed the bookmarks bar with Match style background turning dark over a dark wallpaper edge beside a light search box when no glass style is on.
  • Fixed WebDAV background sync possibly staying off for a long time after the device clock was set back; a successful reconnect now also resets the throttle wait.

Toolbar Popup & Quote Fonts

Lumno 1.1.3 adds a toolbar popup, lets you choose a font for the daily quote, lets a glass material hold the New Tab light or dark, eases New Tab blocks into place when sections appear or hide, and stops WebDAV services such as Nutstore from being flooded while they throttle.

New features (6)
  • Clicking the Lumno toolbar icon now opens a popup. It shows the current page's title and address (hover a cut-off one to read it in full), and adds the page to your New Tab shortcuts, copies its link or opens the command bar in one click. With Web clip turned on in Labs you can clip the page from here, and on pages with a video you can start picture-in-picture and set Auto picture-in-picture. Quick settings switch the theme, Match page colors and Show open tabs by default; the footer shows the version and WebDAV sync status, with links to Settings, shortcut setup, Feedback and What's new (#82).
  • Choose the daily quote's font: LXGW WenKai, ZCOOL XiaoWei or the system sans-serif, from the New Tab appearance panel or Options.
  • A new "Material theme" for glass materials offers Match New Tab, Light and Dark. Light or Dark holds the New Tab in that theme while a glass material is on, with that mode's wallpaper, and Light keeps light glass over any wallpaper. The New Tab opens in the chosen theme.
  • Showing or hiding the clock, bookmarks, site cards or daily quote, switching the bookmark view or bar layout, and entering Zen mode now ease the remaining blocks into their new places instead of jumping. Nothing moves with reduced motion or Lumno's Motion effects off.
  • The shortcut size limit rises from 80 to 112, and the shortcut row stays centered while you drag the size or gap slider.
  • When a WebDAV server refuses requests with HTTP 429 or 503 because too many were sent, Lumno pauses background sync and retries on its own after the server's Retry-After or a growing wait (5 minutes up to an hour). Options explains why and when it will try again; data on this device is kept.
Bug fixes (4)
  • Fixed sync locks left by an interrupted write on Nutstore never expiring, which made every round retry until Nutstore temporarily blocked the account (503). Stale locks are now broken by the server's clock, and abandoned lock folders on the server are cleaned up.
  • Fixed the shortcut in Firefox's PDF viewer always opening Lumno New Tab instead of following Restricted page behavior (#84).
  • Fixed a tab's first command bar opening without its entry motion on slower computers.
  • Fixed custom icon backgrounds or folder colors close to the dialog's background losing their swatch outline.

Page Menu Shortcuts & Curated Categories

Lumno 1.1.2 lets you add any page to the New Tab from its context menu, lets you choose the categories the random curated mix draws from, opens the daily wallpaper and the curated panel sooner, and improves most-visited sites and search suggestions on Edge.

New features (7)
  • Right-click any http or https page and choose "Add to Lumno New Tab" to add it to the end of your last shortcut group; a toast on the page confirms the result, and the menu item follows the language picked in Lumno (#82).
  • Choose the categories of the random curated mix: on the Random tab, a category menu next to the photo list's header lets you check the categories you want, and the photo list and the daily photo come only from them. With the random daily photo on, the wallpaper follows the new choice at once. The choice syncs, so devices still show the same photo on the same day.
  • The curated daily photo for tomorrow is downloaded while the New Tab idles, so the first tab after midnight opens without waiting on the network. When today's photo has no copy yet, the previous copy stays until the new one is cached. Cached photos also show in the appearance panel from their local thumbnails.
  • Curated panel tiles are kept as small images on this device (the 60 most recently seen), so reopening the panel only asks the network for photos it has not shown before. These copies stay on this device; sync and WebDAV never carry them.
  • Dragging a website bookmark onto the New Tab shortcuts now moves it only while WebDAV is backing up shortcuts; otherwise the drop adds a copy and keeps the bookmark, and undo removes only the shortcut. Shortcuts added from bookmarks show "(from bookmarks)" in their tooltip.
  • Most-visited sites on Edge are now ranked by your history's visit counts, showing the sites you actually visit instead of Edge's promoted ones.
  • A domain typed with a full-width stop, like baidu。com, now opens as a URL; sentences ending in 。 still search.
Bug fixes (3)
  • Fixed Edge's promoted sites such as office.com showing up as frequent sites in search suggestions.
  • Fixed the overlay taking about three seconds to show after a page load in some browser profiles, with a second shortcut press closing it unseen.
  • Fixed a restored minimized window flashing white or dark gray on the New Tab before the wallpaper was redrawn.

12-Hour Clock & Icon Plates

Lumno 1.1.1 brings a 12-hour clock, a time color, and plates for irregular icons to the New Tab, opens the New Tab cleaner and sooner, and polishes light liquid glass and bookmark paging.

New features (7)
  • Added 12-hour clock (under Show seconds, in the Appearance panel or Settings): hours read 1–12 with a small AM / PM mark after the digits, and screen readers hear the 12-hour time too (#81).
  • Added Time color (Auto / Light / Dark): Auto takes its ink from the wallpaper or the theme, while Light and Dark hold it; on a wallpaper the ink still takes the wallpaper's hue and shadow. The clock's seconds no longer blink as they change.
  • Shortcut icons without a background of their own now sit on a plate tinted from their main color, so they read as tiles like the others. The edit dialog adds an "Add a background to irregular icons" switch with colors taken from the icon, and a palette button opens the folder color picker for any color, HEX / RGB input, and your saved colors.
  • The New Tab opens sooner: custom uploads are preloaded too, and the content follows the wallpaper more quickly. No blurred stand-in or part-drawn wallpaper shows while it opens.
  • Light liquid glass: the search box and results are easier to read, edges catch light like a thick pane and bend further, and the bookmark cards, recent card, and shortcut plates are as solid as the results plate instead of a thin film.
  • A trackpad swipe turns exactly one bookmark page, slow swipes turn too, and swipes and clicks during the slide are no longer dropped.
  • The shortcut dock's magnification follows the pointer closely, and hovering a bookmark folder opens it without a stall.
Bug fixes (3)
  • Fixed the shortcut dialog's title, labels, and inputs nearly vanishing when light-theme liquid glass turned it dark.
  • Fixed bookmark cards showing as blurred rectangles over the wallpaper before the New Tab appeared.
  • Fixed some see-through shortcut icons occasionally missing their plate.

Shortcut Groups & Liquid Glass

Lumno 1.1.0 brings glass materials, shortcut groups, six clock faces, and your own quote collection to the New Tab, while cutting Lumno's cost on every web page and making sync more reliable and more private. Thank you to @CharlyWYF, @csxo, and @pythoner1984 for contributing code!

New features (16)
  • Added a New Tab Material setting (Appearance panel → Style, or Settings): choose Acrylic or Liquid glass to give the search bar, cards, buttons, menus, dialogs, and the Appearance panel a glass finish. Liquid glass refracts and disperses the wallpaper behind it like iOS, and its tint adapts to the wallpaper. Thanks to @CharlyWYF for the original frosted glass style (#78)!
  • Shortcuts can now be organized into groups. Clicking the add tile lets you add a site or a new group, and groups can be named, renamed, moved, and deleted with undo. Shortcuts drag between groups, and group titles drag to reorder groups. The shortcut limit rises from 60 to 200; shortcuts beyond the browser's sync space stay on this device and sync through WebDAV when it is on.
  • Added Time font: the clock can use Open Sans, Geist, JetBrains Mono, Bricolage Grotesque, Unbounded, or Bitcount, and the weight slider follows each face's range. Time size and Time opacity sliders set how large and how strong the clock appears, and the button beside each slider restores its default. The Lumno wordmark and the clock now use a clear ink tinted by the wallpaper.
  • The top bookmarks bar gains a Bar style option (Docked to top or Floating) and a Liquid glass background, and unrolls into view. The Appearance panel adds Bookmarks and Site cards sections for the bookmark display mode, rows, and site card type.
  • Site cards can be dragged onto the shortcuts, the bookmarks bar, or a bookmark folder, with undo. Resting the pointer on the site cards heading switches between Recent and Most visited. Bookmarked sites and bookmark folders gain Add to shortcuts in their context menus.
  • The daily quote can come from your own TXT or MD file (one quote per line). Shuffle it from the panel and see how many quotes you have; Settings gains daily quote options, and the custom collection syncs over WebDAV. Thanks to @pythoner1984 (#75)!
  • Added Search Panel Order to Settings: drag to order the groups and sources in the search box panel, or drag them right in the search scope panel. Ctrl/⌘ + Z undoes and Shift + Ctrl/⌘ + Z redoes. Thanks to @csxo (#77)!
  • Hovering a card in the tab switcher shows a close button that closes that tab.
  • Close other tabs in the New Tab and overlay search inputs now asks first, and pinned and grouped tabs stay open.
  • Bing and curated wallpapers can be saved with Save to local wallpapers from their context menu. The local library holds up to 30 wallpapers; libraries already past that keep what they have.
  • Alt + arrow keys move the focused shortcut.
  • With WebDAV sync, a setting changed separately on two devices is now reported as a conflict for you to resolve instead of silently overwriting the newer change.
  • Faster and lighter: the New Tab entry now settles in 260ms. The selection toolbar loads into pages only while it is on, the copy-link feature is injected on first use, and page loads, tab switches, and focus no longer wake the background. The pinyin library loads on the first search, and Open Sans ships as a woff2 half the size.
  • More private: third-party icon services receive only the site, not the full page address. Web pages can no longer probe the browser's icon cache. Input that looks like a URL, host name, or file path (including the prefilled current page address) is no longer sent to search suggestion services, and suggestion requests omit cookies and the referrer.
  • Accessibility: every control shows the same keyboard focus ring, every page reduces motion when the system asks for it, and the Settings info icons, segmented choices, and confirm bubbles work better with the keyboard and screen readers.
  • In-page toasts now appear at the top in a solid light or dark surface that matches the page. Windows shows thinner scrollbars, and the Traditional Chinese interface uses Taiwan wording.
Bug fixes (11)
  • Fixed shortcuts in the second row responding to hover and clicks only on the top half of the icon (#73). Thanks to @zhujinshi for the report!
  • Fixed pastes into the web overlay on ChatGPT landing in ChatGPT's composer.
  • Fixed a lost WebDAV lock release blocking every device, failed applies causing false conflicts and extra sync rounds, and snapshots piling up on the server. Other WebDAV connections keep syncing while one waits for its restore, and WebDAV sync continues when settings exceed the browser's sync capacity.
  • Settings that fail to save now show an error, and writes refused by the browser's sync quota are retried.
  • Fixed large wallpapers not showing in Chrome.
  • Fixed headings, breadcrumbs, and group buttons being hard to read on mid-tone wallpapers.
  • Fixed context menu clicks also opening the shortcut, bookmark, or site card underneath. Escape now closes one layer at a time.
  • The web overlay no longer restyles the page's own icons and fonts or captures the page's keys while it is open, and the web clip dock's icons no longer restyle the clipped page.
  • Fixed shortcut size and spacing shrinking on short windows, and icons sitting off-center on 1x screens.
  • Fixed the fallback shortcut discarding key combinations with arrow keys.
  • Chinese and Japanese text at weights 550–600 now draws at Medium instead of looking much heavier than the Latin text beside it.

Lumno 1.0 is here. What started as a command bar for any web page has grown into a complete toolkit with a customizable New Tab, a tab switcher, aggregate search, WebDAV sync, and a Help Center, now on Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. It is also the first version listed on Firefox Add-ons. Thank you to everyone who suggested ideas, reported issues, and contributed code along the way!

New features (7)
  • Added Lumno Help Center search: type lm, lumno, or the Help Center's name in Chinese or Japanese (帮助中心, 說明中心, ヘルプセンター) on the New Tab or in the web overlay and press Tab to ask the Help Center directly. Up to six matching pages are listed, each opening at the matching section in the interface language. Synonyms, word forms, and typos are understood, so questions such as "how do I change the shortcut" find the right page. Matching happens locally, and your query never leaves the browser.
  • Hovering a Help Center result, or selecting it with the arrow keys, shows a card beside the results with the passage around the match and your query words highlighted. When few pages match, close pages are suggested; when nothing matches, ways to reach the developer are offered.
  • A tip above the New Tab search input shows how to ask the Help Center with lm, and the Help Center row in Settings gains an "Ask from the search box" demo. Onboarding, Settings, and the New Tab appearance panel now link to the Help Center.
  • Shortcuts can be stacked into folders: drop a website shortcut on the middle of another to create a bookmark folder holding both at the end of the bookmarks bar, with undo and redo. Websites inside a folder can now choose an icon in the edit dialog.
  • Added "Open in a new tab" settings (Settings → General → New Tab), with a separate switch for search results, shortcuts, bookmarks, and site cards. All are off by default.
  • New Tab bookmark folders can be opened in a new tab group from their context menu, and the New Tab search field gains the close-other-tabs button.
  • Feedback & Support now uses the same layout as the rest of Settings, and explanations that only add detail move into an info tooltip beside the title. The Tutorial button is renamed Welcome tour. Feedback for non-Chinese interfaces now goes to X instead of Discord, and the WeChat feedback group QR code opens in a dialog on the current page.
Bug fixes (6)
  • Fixed web clip on Edge often being treated as turned off and opening Settings instead. The Picture-in-Picture window now opens right after the click; clipped content no longer inherits the page's grid columns and fixed heights, and its links open in new tabs.
  • Fixed Enter doing nothing right after committing text with an input method. The New Tab search input also takes focus earlier, so the first keys are no longer inserted as raw letters (#69). Thanks to @silencial for the report!
  • Fixed a shortcut folder's menu not closing when its tile is clicked again; the tile now stays raised while its menu is open.
  • Fixed controls showing through New Tab dropdown menus.
  • Fixed shortcut icon corners looking too round on narrow screens.
  • The address or passage line beside a search suggestion now uses the room left in the row, so short titles are no longer cut off.

Firefox Support & Search Clear Button

  • Added Firefox support: Lumno now runs in Firefox and Firefox-based browsers such as Zen, and is listed on Firefox Add-ons from 1.0.0. New Tab, the web overlay, the tab switcher, bookmarks, and WebDAV sync all work there. The Firefox build uses default shortcuts that do not clash with the browser (Ctrl+Shift+K/L/C on macOS, Alt+K/L/C elsewhere), and its copy names Firefox's own menus.
  • Settings Firefox cannot honor (Auto Picture-in-Picture and Web Clip) appear dimmed, and hovering the row explains why. Chromium-only features and store links are hidden automatically in Firefox.
  • Added a clear button to the search input on New Tab and the web overlay. It appears once you type and clears the query while keeping focus in the field.
  • When another browser is writing to WebDAV, sync now shows "Pending sync" and retries automatically instead of failing, so Chrome and Firefox on the same account sync smoothly.
  • Built-in shortcut icons now match more of the hosts people actually save, such as bilibili, Weibo, and Taobao subdomains. Google Maps matches only the /maps section.
  • Onboarding now lists Firefox and Zen among the supported browsers.
Bug fixes (5)
  • Fixed ChatGPT sending only the search marker without the question, caused by Lumno and ChatGPT's own prefill writing the composer at the same time (#65).
  • Fixed the background being suspended while WebDAV uploaded large media, which could leave the write lock behind and make every device report that another device is writing.
  • Fixed the appearance panel's scrolling content stopping short of the panel's bottom edge.
  • Fixed an unnecessary entry animation when opening the quote settings for the first time.
  • Removed the search scope menu's check mark, which never displayed correctly; the selected item is marked by its highlighted background.

Faster New Tab & Store-Aware Rating Links

Thanks for the suggestions in #53. Daily quotes and Bing wallpapers shipped in 0.9.56; this release adds categorized curated wallpapers and image URLs. Direct Unsplash / Wallhaven API integration and arbitrary tag search are not included.
